Attendance

March 25, 2007

STUDENT SERVICES ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is the first requirement for a successful high school experience. Students need to regard daily attendance and punctuality as fundamental for later success. Irregular attendance is a handicap in school and on the job. California State law requires daily school attendance until the student graduates, reaches the age of eighteen or passes the California Proficiency Exam.
Parents are requested to call the Attendance Office (533-4299, x7800) after 9:00 a.m. to indicate that the student will be absent.
Re-admittance After Absence
When absences of one or more periods occur, the following procedures apply:
1. If a parent has notified the Attendance Office by phone on the day of the absence, no parent note is required
2. If a parent call was not received by the Attendance Office, the student must bring to the Attendance Office a statement from the parent or guardian which includes:
a. Name of student
b. Student ID number
c. Date or dates of absence
d. Reason for absence
e. Signature of parent, guardian or emancipated student
3. Unverified absences can only be cleared by parent within 48 hours of student returning to school. Absences not cleared within 48 hours cannot be cleared and become truants. A Saturday School is assigned.
4. The student reports to the Health Office to receive a clearance slip after being ill with a contagious disease.
5. The student is required to do make-up assignments for all class work missed during any absence. These assignments should be requested from each teacher on the day of return. On the third day of absence, make-up assignments may be requested from the Attendance Office.
Make-up for Absence
Classwork missed during any absence must be made up during a reasonable time specified by the teacher. Failure to do so will be reflected in the grade for the course, and in case of excessive absence without make-up work the student is subject to being withdrawn from the class with no credit or receiving a failing grade for the class.
Reasons for Absence
Absences will be marked “Excused” for the following reasons if the parent calls or sends a note:
1. illness
2. dental services
3. medical services
4. optometrical services
5. quarantine by health authorities
6. funeral of relative.
7. court summons by subpoena
8. religious holidays and observances
9. baby-sitting or family care with prior approval.
10. answering traffic citations;
11. college visitations
12. family vacations
13. baby-sitting, when not an emergency
14. running errands;
15. oversleeping
Absences will be marked “Truancy” for any unauthorized absence from school.
Tardiness
Promptness in reporting to school and to the classroom is vital to the efficient operation of the school and the individual class. Any student who is not in his/her class when the bell rings, is tardy. Four tardies will result in an unsatisfactory citizenship grade for the class at the quarter. Repeated tardiness will result in assignment to Saturday School and/or Detention. Continued tardiness may result in removal from class. Random tardy sweeps are conducted throughout the school year. Students caught in the tardy sweep will receive detention.
Truancy
A truant is “an all day and individual period absence without valid excuse by parent or guardian.” Any all day truancy will result in Saturday School and Detention. Truancy period and all day will be carefully monitored and dealt with in the following manner:
1st truancy: Teacher counsels the student. Referral to counselor.
2nd truancy: Teacher calls parent/guardian and progress report for possible “U” in citizenship. Possible assignment of Saturday School and Detention.
3rd truancy: Teacher issues “U” in citizenship. Counselor calls the parent/guardian to discuss the problem. Possible assignment of Saturday School and Detention.
4th truancy: A letter is sent to the parent/guardian indicating that truancy is being documented. Counselor and Dean hold a student-parent/guardian conference. Appropriate school action will be taken.
5th truancy: A letter is sent to the parent/guardian indicating a second documentation of truancy. Dean holds a student-parent/guardian-dean conference. The Dean completes the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) Data Sheet. Appropriate school action will be taken.
6th truancy: A letter is sent to the parent/guardian indicating a third documentation of truancy and a referral to the School Attendance Review Board for further action. Child Welfare and Attendance holds a student-parent/guardian conference. Appropriate school action will be taken.
PASSES
Off-campus Passes
Once a student arrives on campus, the student must remain on campus until his/her classes for the day are completed.
Students are not to leave the campus without an off-campus pass
from the Attendance Office. A note signed by a parent or guardian must be brought to the Attendance Office before 9:00 a.m. when a student is to leave campus. All notes for off-campus passes will be verified by the Attendance Office. Parents must leave a phone number where Attendance Office can contact them. Students who become ill during the school day should report to the Health Office. They will be released to go home after their parents are contacted by an authorized employee, the parent approves such release and an off-campus pass is issued. Students leaving without an off-campus pass will receive a truant and a Saturday School. Students who leave campus without permission at lunch or during school hours are subject to disciplinary action which will include receiving truants for all classes missed and may be subject to a citation by TPD.
Activity Passes and Participation in Activities
Such requests must be issued by teachers or staff twenty-four hours in advance of the activity. Teachers of whom requests are made have the option to refuse the request (too frequent absences, lack of achievement, and/or poor citizenship.) Teachers refusing to honor requests are expected to notify the requesting teacher or staff member in sufficient time. Students released for an activity will receive a period absence from the class they miss. Activity absences will be included in the total count of absences on the report card. Students shall attend all classes on the day of an afternoon or evening event to be eligible to attend or participate in the activity. All students are required to have a pass from their teacher to be out of class.
LOST AND FOUND
A lost and found station is maintained in the Attendance Office.
