Truancy

March 25, 2007

West High School defines the word truant as “an absence with out valid excuse by parent or guardian."

Truancy will be carefully monitored and dealt with in the following manner:

1st truancy: Teacher counsels the student.

2nd truancy: Teacher calls parent/guardian. Possible assignment of Saturday School and Detention.

3rd truancy: Counselor calls the parent/guardian to discuss the problem. Possible assignment of Saturday School and Detention.

4th truancy: A letter is sent to the parent/guardian indicating that truancy is being documented. Counselor holds a student-parent/guardian conference. Appropriate school action will be taken, including possible withdrawal from class and loss of credit.

5th truancy: A letter is sent to the parent/guardian indicating a second documentation of truancy. Dean holds a student-parent/guardian-dean conference. The Dean completes the School Attendance and Referral Board (SARB) Data Sheet. Appropriate school action will be taken.

6th truancy: A letter is sent to the parent/guardian indicating a third documentation of truancy and a referral to the School Attendance and Review Board for further action. Child Welfare and Attendance Supervisor holds a student-parent/guardian-supervisor conference. Appropriate school action will be taken.
