It is important for all ELL students to sign up for and take the CELDT this summer prior to registration for the 2009-10 school year. Please read the following letter from TUSD and then sign up online at www.tfl.tusd.org.
Dear Parent or Guardian of an English Learner:
All English Learners must be tested on the state test called the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). This test is state mandated and must be administered every year until the student is redesignated as Fluent English Proficient (FEP).
For the past two years, your child took the CELDT exam at your local school on a designated date. In order to increase efficiency and convenience, we are offering 5 weeks during the summer to complete the CELDT test. We will test all students prior to the commencement of school on September 10, 2009. Summer testing minimizes classroom disruptions and increases student performance.
The CELDT assesses students’ English proficiency. All students receive an individual score for the four subtests: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, there is an overall score, which aides in determining the student’s ELL proficiency level. Results are reported to parents and teachers.
From May 8, 2009 to June 18, 2009, TUSD will offer on-line CELDT appointments. Parent/Guardian will go to www.tfl.tusd.org Select “CELDT Testing” from the menu on the top of the site. Based on grade level, choose the time and date that the student(s) will take the CELDT exam. Select “Register” and complete all requested information. To add any additional siblings, click “add attendee” and complete all the requested information.
Locations for ALL returning students K-12th grade are: Magruder Middle School, Jefferson Middle School, Hull @ Levy Middle School; Madrona Middle School; and the EMB
Testing times: 9 am or 1pm
Dates: see online calendar for the dates at each location
Parents must provide transportation to the testing location.
Testing for K-1 students is approximately 1 1/2 hours. Students in grades 2- 12 may take up to 2 1/2 hours, depending on the student’s language fluency.
If you have any questions about the CELDT, please call the school office at
(310) 533- 4299.
Thank you,
Dr. Laurie Love
